There was no official announcement, but the Oakland Athletics quietly removed two more players from their 40-man roster today.

According to the team's transaction page, infielder Buddy Kennedy was claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals. Additionally, left-handed reliever Kirby Snead was outrighted to Triple-A, bringing Oakland’s 40-man roster down to 38.

This count does not include Sean Newcomb, who is currently on the 60-day injured list and will need to be reinstated to the 40-man roster once the World Series concludes.

Kennedy was originally picked up off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on September 9 and was assigned to Triple-A, without making an appearance for the A’s at the major league level. However, he did play in 10 games for Arizona before Oakland acquired him.

Snead, on the other hand, arrived in Oakland as part of the trade that sent Matt Chapman to the Toronto Blue Jays. He started the season on the injured list due to a shoulder strain but eventually made 15 appearances, posting a 4.63 ERA and a 4.37 FIP across 11 2/3 innings.

A’s Sign Vinny Nittoli to Minor League Deal

According to Jessica Kleinschmidt, the Athletics have signed right-hander Vinny Nittoli to a minor league contract, which also includes an invitation to major league Spring Training.

Nittoli, 32, was recently removed from the New York Mets’ 40-man roster and became a free agent. Originally selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 25th round of the 2014 draft, he split the 2023 season between the Mets and Cubs. To date, he has logged only 6 2/3 innings at the major league level in his career.
